How to Write an Effective Cover Letter

A Cover Letter is a very crucial part of your job-application that the recruiter would review. It is a summarized document of your resume and clearly gives what your career expectations are. A well-written Cover Letter enables your resume to stand out from the rest. It helps the recruiter to clearly understand your profile. This can help your profile to get shortlisted for the next process.

A recruiter always needs to analyze a profile before short listing it; hence a short summary of the education, skills and experience is what needs to be highlighted. The Cover Letter should contain strong words to explain oneself so as to attract the reader. On first glance, it should catch the eye and convey the message.

A perfect Cover Letter emphasizes the core skills and experience, therefore creates interests to refer your resume. The Cover Letter should be tailor-made for the specific organization and role you are targeting. The Cover Letter should clearly highlight your skills specific to the job opening.

The Cover (or covering) Letter introduces you and the context in which the resume is being sent to a prospective employer. A concise, sharply focused cover letter acts as a precursor to the detailed resume which is attached.

What should be included in the Cover Letter?

A well written Cover Letter should convey your competence concisely and precisely. It should include:

Opening Line The opening line should be short and precise while explaining why it is that you’re writing and from which source have you received the reference.

Second Section - Describe your total experience in the targeted industry, core skills specific to the role. Write about the reason as to why are you suitable for the job.

Third Section - In this section, you need to mention your key responsibilities in the last organization. Also you need to outline your achievements in the last organization.

Fourth Section - Here you need to highlight your educational details including the course name, institute name and the place.

Closing Para Elaborate more on your unique selling points including leadership skills, communication skills, problem solving, team player, etc. as well as your proven abilities.

Signature - You can Sign off the letter by writing ‘Yours’ sincerely’ followed by your name.
